Critical thinking & visual literacy have become an integral part of my teaching.

Critical thinking is a foundational skill for 21st century success. It is recognized by educators everywhere. But how do we help students learn to do it? And is visual literacy can help students become critical thinkers?

Do know about Trevi Fountain in Italy? Looking for knowing  more…

One of Rome’s most popular landmarks and probably the most famous fountain in the world. It is designed like a monumental triumphal arch, was built against a wall of the Palazzo Poli. It measures twenty meters wide and twenty-six meters high and occupies more than half the square. The central figure of the fountain, standing in a large niche, is Neptune, god of the sea.

Tradition has it that you will return to Rome if you throw a coin into the fountain’s water basin. You should toss it with your right hand over your left shoulder (or left hand over your right shoulder) with your back to the fountain. You’re not allowed to look behind you while you’re tossing the coin but the fountain is so large it’s basically impossible to miss.

Visual Critical activity

The “critical” in this work, is as an analysis that quest to discover the social and political interests in the production and reception of images in relation to social, cultural effects of power and domination in the context of students’ lives.

Videoclip is a  mutimodal text ou multimodality. The definition of the multimodality from New London Group (1996) is the combination of semiotic modes in a single composition to take effect or meaning.

10- What was the reason  Bon Jovi’s  group to record this clip in Trevi Fountain? Write your point of view.

11- Who could be the main audience?

A short conclusion

we believe that visual literacy   is a powerful pedagogy that helps students to learn how to be critical thinkers. For this to occur,  We have to be planned some activities around the global topics and students have to be shown examples of what critical thinking looks like, in addition to being supported, assessed, encouraged  and given feedback with their  peers and on their own.
